Hello de@r re@ders!
How are you? Here we are a month on with some news of how the project is progressing! And wow! What a January we’ve had; it’s been non-stop, guys!
As those who read me regularly here will know, I went to Madrid late last January to present, for the very first time, the preliminary work from the series we’re planning to launch very shortly. So around 100 people congregated at the “Matadero de Madrid” on the afternoon of January 29 this year, all of whom were games fans, but I don’t suppose they had any idea of what they were about to see. At least that’s the feeling I had, as we’re not just talking about a new video game blog/web/podcast here; this is a product that (as far as I know) has never been seen in Spain before (nor do I know of a similar thing anywhere else)… a documentary web series about video games and video gamers… So everyone was waiting in an air of excitement, I was even more eagerly anticipating their reactions to the 30 minutes of film that took just over a year of hard work to see the light of day. After presenting the project, in both English and Spanish (so other people from outside who had come to the Game Philosophy Conference could understand), it was time for the film show; the lights went down and the faces of the audience transformed, as if by magic, to reflect what we had been working on with such dedication and enthusiasm. There was laughter, surprise and some thrilling moments, but above all, the faces of the entire audience expressed satisfaction and delight at what we had achieved. This experience became so much more precious for me when interviewees who had participated in the project were among those congratulating us, and told us what they thought about it. They felt even happier to be part of this project, and so pleased that we had done something that had matched up to their expectations.
After the presentation, and having had an audience discussion on the film, I returned to Murcia to continue working on the next phases of the project. This has resulted in the official blog for the project which we will be using until we finish our website. I hope you like the way we have organized all the information; we tried to make it as accessible as possible. Furthermore, when we started the blog on February 6, we seized the chance to launch our first chapter on the subject of memories. Here’s the video, which I hope you will enjoy:
As you can see, we have set the story in a fictitious universe in which our protagonist, Professor Broderick, who lives in the future, starts playing a video game called (strangely enough) The Gamer Inside. As if by magic, all sorts of knowledge and experiences relating to our present reality flood into his mind, and that’s when the documentary chapters begin.
As for the contentof thisfirst chapter, our stories go back tothe earliest memoriesof some of the oldest people we interviewed, someregular players andothers who had never played a video game in their lives, but who had played other games. And something called “Pong!” featured amongthese various forms of entertainment; the offspring of computersand electronics…the philosophy of the channel#TGImemoriesphilosophy encapsulates the approach of thisfirst chapter, whichis to show video games as the evolution of other previous forms of entertainment that our society has experienced…and three other channels have quite naturally arisen out of this historic change:
#TGIculture: Here we will look at the many hobbies and interests that have arisen out of electronic entertainment, which has produced a culture rich in nuances (almost as many as players, I think).
#TGIeducation: Already, even to be talking about games, implies a process of acquiring knowledge and training, which we will explore in this channel: video games as a learning tool and an educational support.
#TGIindustry: Here we will explore the world of the creative mind; the artists, programmers, writers, journalists, marketing people and other professionals who have made video games possible, and who have created an industry that is one of the most technologically advanced and powerful in terms of profit generated worldwide.
Regarding the timing of the next chapters, we will launch a new instalment of the series at the start of the next three months. So the next chapter in our blog will be available on March 5 at the latest, we will then launch the #TGIculture channel, and I guarantee some great surprises are in store for you!
Greetings to you @ll, and welcome to The Gamer Inside!
